5 Signs It Might Be Time to Start Therapy
A lot of people wait longer than they need to before starting therapy. There's often a quiet belief that things "aren't bad enough yet" — that therapy is for a bigger, louder version of what you're going through. In my experience, the opposite is usually true: reaching out earlier means less pain, faster relief, and a stronger foundation to build on.
Here are five signs it might be time.
1. You're using more energy than usual to feel okay
If getting through the day requires constant management — deep breaths in the car, distractions at night, staying "on" all the time — that's your nervous system asking for support.
2. The same feeling keeps coming back
Anxiety, sadness, irritability, self-doubt — when a feeling keeps returning even after you've "handled" it, there's usually something underneath asking to be seen.
3. You're avoiding things you used to enjoy
Withdrawing from friends, cancelling plans, or losing interest in things that used to feel like you is often an early sign of depression or burnout.
4. Your relationships are feeling harder
Short fuse with your partner, tension with a parent, distance from friends — patterns that repeat across relationships usually have roots worth exploring.
5. You've been thinking about therapy for a while
If you've considered it more than once, that's usually reason enough. You don't need a specific diagnosis or a crisis to benefit.
What to expect from a first session
The first session is mostly a conversation — I'll ask what's bringing you in, we'll talk through your history at whatever pace feels comfortable, and we'll start shaping a plan together. You don't need to have it all figured out before you come in. That's what we're here for.
If you're in Charlotte, NC or anywhere in North Carolina and any of this resonated, I offer free 15-minute consultations. Reach out here — no pressure to book after.
